Automatic Incident Detection

Detect incidents in seconds on a highway or in a tunnel using 360° long-range radar.

Navtech's automatic incident detection system improves journeys and advances safety on roads and in tunnels. It delivers comprehensive automatic incident detection capabilities and actionable data all from the same system. It works when you need it most: in poor visibility and harsh tunnel environments.

AUTOMATIC INCIDENT DETECTION

What is automatic incident detection?

Automatic incident detection (AID) covers a number of incident types from stopped vehicle, to wrong-way driver, pedestrian detection and more. AID systems are used to get help to drivers faster, warn other road users, and reduce the impact of secondary incidents.

EU regulations require AID to be in place in any tunnel over 500m in length due to the enclosed space increasing the risk associated with any incident. AID is deployed on freeways and motorways across the world to advance safety as transport authorities look to achieve zero harm targets, and improve the efficiency and sustainability of roads. By clearing incidents on busy roads more quickly using Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technology, drivers experience more reliable journeys and the CO2 impact of congestion is reduced.

WHY RADAR?

Why use radar for AID?

Radar works in poor visibility when it’s needed most: in heavy rain, fog, snow, complete darkness, and bright glare. In these conditions accidents are more likely to happen and other technologies start to fail.

It also works in harsh tunnel environments when covered in dust and dirt, and detects through smoke and hot gases in the event of a fire.

ITS SOLUTION Why use Navtech's 360° radar solution?

Navtech’s automatic incident detection solution delivers multiple capabilities from the same system which reduces the number of technologies that need to be installed on the roadside and subsequent operational management.

It provides comprehensive AID for a range of incident types, including stopped vehicle, wrong-way driver, debris, queue, pedestrian, hard-shoulder, and wildlife detection. The same system can deliver further actionable data, such as count and classification information and situational awareness for emergency services in the event of a tunnel fire.

It works when and where you need it most: in all weather conditions and harsh tunnel environments, across long distances and in specific problem hotspots, where fibre is in place and where its not, or where it’s costly to undertake associated infrastructure work.

Our 360° long-range radar mean the entire roadway or tunnel can be covered with fewer sensors. The solution has been proven as a safety system across schemes of 250+ miles and is trusted in tunnels to automatically trigger warning signs and tunnel closures. It’s used on busy strategic roads to help reduce journey times, quickly alerting road operators to problems on the network, while providing vehicle count data to inform KPI reporting.

Customisable software with rules-based alerts

You can precisely define what is a stopped vehicle on your network, and where is the hard shoulder, so operational teams only get the alerts they need.

Automatically detects incidents 24/7

Operators are alerted to an incident in seconds, meaning time spent monitoring multiple video screens can be used more efficiently and detection is reduced from minutes to seconds, saving vital response time.

Proven across long stretches of roadway

Collectively our radar are installed across thousands of miles of roadway. This includes on smaller schemes ranging from just a few miles to large scale deployments of 250+ miles

Used in the world's longest tunnels

Our automatic incident detection system is trusted to automatically trigger warning signs and tunnel closures in the event of a wrong-way driver.

ClearWay

Navtech’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) will find a stopped vehicle or wrong-way driver in seconds so operators can get assistance to road users faster. The same system can provide further actionable data such as vehicle count and classification.
